KAPN FIELD GUIDE / AROMA & FLAVOUR
Guaiol
Guaiol is a guaiane sesquiterpene alcohol; the cited cell research specifically tested (-)-guaiol.
Where it occurs naturally
(-)-Guaiol is reported in many Chinese medicinal plants. Sources: (-)-Guaiol regulates autophagic cell death depending on mTOR signaling in NSCLC
Aroma & flavour
Evidence for a distinct sensory aroma profile for guaiol is not established.
What has research actually studied?
An in-vitro study of isolated (-)-guaiol in non-small-cell lung cancer cells measured mTOR signaling, autophagy markers, cell survival and colony formation. It reported reduced mTORC1/2 signaling and cell proliferation, with results consistent with autophagic cell death. Sources: (-)-Guaiol regulates autophagic cell death depending on mTOR signaling in NSCLC
What the evidence does not show
This is cell-culture research on one enantiomer, not a clinical trial. It does not show that guaiol treats cancer or that the same response occurs in people.
What does its presence in cannabis mean?
No direct human research on cannabis products containing guaiol was identified. Presence in a product does not establish an effect or allow a predictable experience to be inferred.
