KAPN FIELD GUIDE / AROMA & FLAVOUR
Terpineol
Terpineol names several related monoterpene alcohol isomers, including α-terpineol.
Where it occurs naturally
α-Terpineol is reported as a naturally occurring constituent of many essential oils. Sources: α-Terpineol, a natural monoterpene: A review of its biological properties
Aroma & flavour
α-Terpineol is described as having a pleasant, lilac-like odor. Sources: α-Terpineol, a natural monoterpene: A review of its biological properties
What has research actually studied?
A laboratory study tested isolated α-terpineol in tumour-cell models, assessing cell growth/viability and NF-κB signaling. It reported dose-dependent inhibition of NF-κB translocation and activity alongside reduced cell growth. Sources: Alpha Terpineol: A Potential Anticancer Agent which Acts through Suppressing NF-κB Signalling
What the evidence does not show
Cell-culture findings do not establish clinical efficacy or safety. This study tested α-terpineol, not an unspecified terpineol mixture, and did not study cannabis.
What does its presence in cannabis mean?
A cannabis product's terpene listing cannot be used to predict the product's experience. No direct human research on cannabis products containing terpineol was identified.
